Dropping a NY Minute
It wasn’t just the temperatures that
were hot on June 8-9. Eleven athletes from the Morris County Swim
Club set 33 personal Best Times and 6 club records at the Summer in
the Bronx 50-meter pool meet held at Lehman College. Jessica Stiles
of Denville dropped a New York minute in swimming to a club record
and personal Best Time in the W11-12 800 Freestyle in 11:55.01.
Stiles made time for the event in between her rehearsal and recital
for the Danceworks of Denville annual show held at Morris Knolls.
Courtney Good of Jefferson Twp set two
club records. “Courtney hasn’t been swimming a lot, relatively
speaking, but came to the meet with a good attitude.” expressed
coach Al Ledgin of Basking Ridge, “Our swimmers set their practice
schedules based on their goals and she’s been busy with other
activities. But she’s kept up some swimming and a good attitude,
knowing that it’s not easy to push yourself with limited practice
time and was able to set a couple of 15&O club records. By giving
the swimmers ownership in setting their practice schedule, it teaches
them a good life-lesson on prioritizing their goals.” Good’s
records came in the W15&O 200 Backstroke with a 3:05.81 and 100
Breaststroke in a time of 1:35.04. Sister Taylor set 3 personal Best
Times in her 3 events, the W9-10 50 Backstroke in 53.30, a Silver
Time in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:54.39 and 100 Freestyle in 1:46.78.
From Denville, Anna Baccaglini set 3
personal Best Times, including a 32 second improvement in the W11-12
200 Freestyle with a Silver time of 2:45.68. Silver times qualify the
athletes for the final qualifier leading up to the championship meet,
the NJ Swimming Long Course Junior Olympics in late July at Rutgers.
Long course meets are held at 50-meter pools, like in the Olympics.
The USA Swimming Olympic Time Trials are in Omaha Nebraska June
29-July 6.
Also from Denville, Stephanie Harris
added 4 Best Times of her own with a 3:24.32 W11-12 200IM, 43.28 50
Butterfly, 3:00.58 200 Freestyle and 6:33.03 400 freestyle. Brian
Stiles swam to Best Times in the M13-14 200IM in 2:42.09 and a
1:34.34 100 Breaststroke. Brother Michael had a strong Sunday portion
of the meet, adding 4 Best Times in 4 events with a M9-10 200
Freestyle time of 3:22.97, 50 Butterfly in 47.47, 100 Backstroke in
1:41.87 and 50 Breaststroke in 52.31, all Silver Times. “Michael
and many of our swimmers bring a great attitude to practice and it
shows in the great times they’re getting at meets,” expressed
Coach Jenn Ciulla of Madison, “Our swimmers set their practice
schedules based on their goals and they learn a great life-lesson as
they take ownership of their lives. Those swimmers that commit, to
what seem to be difficult practice schedules in their parents or
friends eyes, teach the swimmers the value of taking responsibility
and results in excellent achievements in the pool.”
